The sinuses are hollow cavities in the face that add moisture and warmth to air that is breathed in. Usually, sinuses are kept clear by cilia, which filter air and clear mucus. When the cilia move slowly - because of sinus problems or allergies - mucus cannot be easily cleared. This can result in sinus congestion, colds, facial pain, sinus irritation, headaches, stuffy nose and earaches.
Sinus Health
Sinus problems can include sinusitis, or sinus inflammation, and rhinosinusitis, or nasal inflammation. People with allergies and asthma are more likely to suffer from sinus problems, and they are especially common in winter, when air within the home is dry and stale from heating systems.
It’s important to see a physician for sinus symptoms, since it’s often a recurrent problem that can last for months or years if not properly treated. Decongestants and antibiotics may be prescribed, and with chronic problems, referral to an ENT (ear nose and throat) specialist may be necessary.
Many home remedies can help alleviate sinus symptoms, and inexpensive devices can help too. Humidifiers are a valuable tool in fighting the dry, irritating air of forced air heating systems. A more expensive but permanent option is a whole house humidifier. Conversely, air that is too humid can cause mold to grow in the home, contributing to allergies and sinus problems. In this case, a dehumidifier can be used.
Nasal Irrigation
Nasal irrigation also can reduce the discomfort of chronic sinus problems. There are a few different types of nasal irrigation devices. They work by forcing a saline solution into the nose and sinus cavities, which thins mucus and makes it easier to clear out. A saline solution can be purchased, or made at home by adding a teaspoon of salt to a cup of warm water. Baking soda can be added to ease burning.
Popular irrigation devices include the neti pot and nori. These are pots similar in shape and design to teapots. To irrigate the sinuses, a saline solution is poured from the pot into one nostril. The solution flows through the nasal passages, thinning mucus. Other devices, like the The Grossan Hydro Pulse Sinus System or the SinuPulse Elite, require battery or electric power; they supply pulsation to irrigate the sinuses. A bulb syringe is another device used to clear sinuses; a saline solution is sprayed from the syringe into the nostril.
Keeping air moist and warm and irrigating the sinuses can help to offset sinus pain and irritation. Hydration, nutrition and consulting with a medical professional are also necessary steps to promote sinus health.
